Early season management is critical for Iowa crops

As far as weather goes, Mother Nature has not given us too many challenges thus far in 2020. However, she did give us a reminder of just who is in charge over the weekend. With a little frost stress and margins squeezed tighter than ever, producers must be following a strong management plan.

Tyler Steinkamp is a technical agronomist for WinField United. He says last weekend?s blast of cold weather has given us a slightly different focus than what we saw only a week before that. He says we did see some frost damage on young beans, but all in all, he says we are sitting in a ?pretty good? position.

As we have been told since last summer, weeds are going to pose a stronger risk after the wet conditions of 2019. Steinkamp says we are already seeing evidence of that. Drier spring conditions have challenged the effectiveness of pre-emergence herbicides as well.

Steinkamp says that making sure every drop of chemical is getting to your plants.

With the colder temps in the soils, micronutrient management is going to be more important than ever.
