Diversifying supply chains to give farmers options

Supply chain disruptions were not just the work of Covid and Covid restrictions. Supply chain problems are still creating challenges for farmers who are trying to move their commodities to domestic and international consumers. Mike Steenhoek, executive director of the Soy Transportation Coalition, says that diversifying your supply chains and having options is always a good thing.

Drought has made moving grain along the Mississippi River very difficult this fall. Low water levels and little relief in the form of rain have limited barge traffic on the river and producers have not been able to move their grain as freely as they normally would. However, Steenhoek says there are alternatives to the Mississippi River when it comes to shipping commodities.

The Soy Transportation Coalition and the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation are continuing a partnership allowing for discounts for first time shippers.
