Dealing with the spread of tar spot in Iowa corn fields

Tar spot is a relatively new disease that has shown up in Iowa. In only the past few years, the disease has spread across a large portion of the state. With any new disease, the questions are:

  • What damage can it do?
  • How can you spot it?
  • How can you fight it?

Randy Kool is an Agronomy Services Representative for Syngenta. He talks about how the disease has spread across Iowa in only a few short years.

Tar Spot can rob your fields of a significant amount of bushels in your cornfield. Kool talks about an Iowa State University study on how much damage can be done.

Spotting Tar Spot is straightforward. Kool says it looks exactly like it sounds, like a spot of tar on their corn leaves. However, an infection can take place up to fourteen days before spots appear.

There are management options that farmers can look at to prevent the disease from spreading in their fields.

Kool talks about how Syngenta?s Miravis Neo can be both a preventative and a curative for dealing with diseases like Tar Spot.
