An equipment specialist speaks to soil compaction caused by heavy equipment making trips across fields. In 2019, the ground was likely wet and the compaction will show up next spring.

CJ Parker, equipment specialist with Case IH, spoke to me about how to limit soil compaction. He finds the depth of compacted soil by digging a hole and running a pocket knife blade vertically through the profile. He suggests tillage to take it out and keep land productive.

Parker says freezing and thawing can address surface compaction, but not the damage done several inches down into the profile.
