The month of September started out with a lot of hope. We were holding out hope for a redesigned North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and a new Farm Bill. We are three days away from the deadline, and we have nothing.

Dairy producers certainly have interest in both the Farm Bill and NAFTA. The last version of the Farm Bill had programs which weren?t living up to the way the dairy market was heading. This version isn?t as dire. National Milk Producers Federation Spokesperson Chris Galen says once the conferees can agree on the main sticking points, the rest should fall into place.

However, when it comes to a NAFTA agreement, Dairy is one of the biggest sticking points to getting Canada on board.

U.S. Trade Ambassador Robert Lighthizer has said the U.S. is close to moving on a trade deal with Mexico and without Canada.
