Cumberland farmer recognized in NCGA Yield Contest with Dekalb corn

Each year the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) holds a nationwide yield contest to encourage farmers to think outside the box when it comes to production. It helps them realize how they can unlock the potential in the corn hybrids we are planting. Farmers enter a field that they attempt to win with and give it a little more special attention. Each fall the results are tallied and the winners are announced for the national contest categories, and the high yielders in each state are also recognized.

Donald Waters farms near Cumberland, Iowa. He tells us about his operation. Not only do they farm but they are also seed and chemical dealers as well.

This is the eighth year that Waters has entered into the contest, and it is the second time he has been named among the state winners.

Waters is a Dekalb Corn Dealer and used hybrid DKC59-82RIB. He says Dekalb corn has been a staple on their farm for years. 2020 posed a lot of challenges for many Iowa farmers. A drought was prevalent over much of the state, with some of the worst being seen in the western third. Waters says that Mother Nature just seemed to look favorably on his field.

There may be farmers out there who wonder if they would have what it takes to take home honors in the annual NCGA Yield Contest. Waters has advice for those people who wonder what it takes to get started. First, talk to your local seed rep, and see what hybrids have a chance of taking your corn production to the next level. Waters also says that he has consistently picked the brains of current and past winners each year at Commodity Classic.
