Let?s see a show of hands. How many of you want 2019 to be like 2018?

Would you like flood, drought, heat and flood again?

Also, would you like a trade war with China?

We do not always get what we want, but even in tough years there are ways to protect against major losses. Some by insuring crops and others by government action.

Due to the losses from the tariffs imposed by China, the Market Facilitation Program (MFP) from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) was supposed to pay 12 billion dollars in a combination of support programs.

The first payment of about 1.7 billion dollars was made this fall and another is scheduled to come out soon. An investigation by Farm Journal shows that the prospect of a more normalized trade flow with China going into 2019 might mean this round of aid payments will be a little less than they were before.
