Could hemp be viable as a cattle feed?

Growing hemp as a cash crop has changed in the past few years. With USDA?s approval and oversight by the states, farmers around the country are starting to plant several fields of the crop. In Iowa, producers can have up to forty acres of it.

However, the biggest question has been is there going to be enough usage and demand to warrant an increase in supply. Researchers at Kansas State University (KSU) are looking into hemp?s viability as a feed source for cattle. Hans Coetzee is the head of the anatomy and physiology department at the KSU College of Veterinary Medicine. He talks about the study.

KSU has received a $200,000 grant from USDA?s National Institute of Food and Agriculture to establish cannabis concentrations in livestock after exposure to industrial hemp.

Coetzee says their main goal is to find more sustainability and financial support for hemp producers.
