Corn yield winner gives tips on producing high yields

Over the past several years, I?ve had the pleasure of interacting with some of the winners of corn and soybean yield contests.

The stories you hear, what they do to bump up yields on corn over 400 bushels and soybeans over 100, are generally untrue. They are technically astute farmers who get it all right before they go to the field and then try to keep their crops stress free from planting to harvesting.

The 2017 winner of the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) Corn Yield contest is David Hula, from Virginia. Hula’s contest plot this year yielded 542 bushels per acre, an all-time record.

Hula spoke to me about the many years he has worked toward a 500 bushel corn yield. He also gave me his recommendations for growing corn that you could apply to your farm.
