After being out at the Farm Progress Show, I heard a lot of talk about uncertainty in agriculture. That word isn?t new in the industry by any means. However, it seems to take on new forms every now and again. There are many issues that farmers are facing, and Iowa 1st District Congresswoman Ashley Hinson met with farmers for a roundtable discussion in Jesup, earlier this week.

Congresswoman Hinson said that the message she has gotten from farmers is that they are worried for the future of their family operations. She says whether it is California being allowed to dictate how they can produce their products, to uncertainty from the Biden Administration on biofuels, all the way to proposed changes to the tax code; they don?t know how they can keep the family farm going another generation.

Of all these concerns, Hinson says that the stepped-up basis is the most worrisome. While farms have many assets, those assets don?t produce income on their own. They are just a necessary cog in the wheel. She says that Congress needs to stop the free-spending it has done recently, and not expect small businesses and farmers to shoulder the burden.

Hinson encourages farmers and small rural businesses to contact her with their stories, so she can help tell them to leadership in Washington so that they understand what is at stake in the first district.
