Chicken Council still expects wing consumption in the billions

I was amazed just before last Thanksgiving when I was talking to someone at my local grocery store. I commented that the day before Thanksgiving is always the craziest day of the year. What shocked me was the response that the crowds that are seen before the Super Bowl dwarfs both Thanksgiving and Easter shopping numbers. Between the beverages, snacks, and chicken wings, the championship game has become a holiday in and of itself.

The Super Bowl has witnessed an evolution in our food consumption. It is an event that captures the country, no matter who is playing. Tom Super is the Senior Vice President of Communications for the National Chicken Council. He breaks down just how many Chicken wings they expect to see consumed this weekend.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the industry was expecting to see a large slowdown in the demand for chicken wings. But because there is a larger supply, prices are very good. This is leading to people buying more wings for their parties or buying them for the first time. We are still looking at how those 1.42 billion wings will stack up.

When it comes down to preferences, Super says that the traditional bone-in wings still are the preferred choice.

No matter who you are rooting for in Sunday?s game, the one thing that everyone will agree on is that the wings are one of the best game-time treats.
