Iowa is the largest swine production state in the Nation so changes in how the animals are raised has a major impact here. The buzz word is ?confinement of sows? as they go through their life cycle of breeding, gestation and nursing of piglets.

A Canadian company claims their system of loose housing is more productive than confinement and the sows have better physical and mental health because of it.

The report on sow housing (above) comes from an interview Ben Nuelle conducted at the Iowa Pork Congress earlier this year. Tim Kurbis is U.S. Operations Manager and President with New Standard Group. Their U.S. Headquarters is located in South Dakota.
