Bringing back common sense & elbow grease to weed control

Yesterday, we heard from BASF Technical Marketing Manager Darren Unland about the Operation Weed Eradication movement. We learned the three pillars upon which the initiative stands. Today we will start to look at those pillars a little more in-depth. Today it is all about using your head, and not being afraid to get your hands dirty.

Darren Unland says that weeds happen in fields, no matter how good your control program is. Sometimes there is a missed spot or a spot that needs more attention.

Unland says mechanical methods such as cultivation and deep tillage may need to be employed. This may not be the revolution of the cultivator, but it is still a practical tool. With the weed control problems that 2019 left for us to deal with in 2020, being proactive is going to help you in the long run.

BASF is collaborating with AGCO to bring the mechanical approach back into weed control. Partnering tillage with chemistry is still a strong 1-2 punch.

If all else fails, go back to the very basics and pull the weed by hand or chop it with a hoe. There isn?t such a thing as a pull-resistant weed.

Tomorrow we will conclude our discussions on Operation Weed Eradication from BASF.
