“Brazilian farmers are formidable competitors”

Brazil has become the most imposing agricultural exporter in the world.

The land mass of the country is roughly equal to the United States, but only the coastal areas had been developed until the 1980?s.

Now, Brazil?s interior is a huge producer of soybeans, cotton, corn, dry beans, oranges, coffee and a host of other crops and a major producer of cattle and poultry.

Brazil?s shortcomings are its lack of roads and railroads, and its corrupt government.

I begin a five-part series today with Chris Clayton, of DTN, who just returned from a two-week trip through the croplands of Brazil?s interior.
