We talk about farm safety heavily in the spring and the fall. It is a good time to have these reminders when we are engaged in the busiest times of the farming calendar. Something my father used to say in half jest, is in the forefront of my mind in this odd spring season.

My dad was the undisputed king of one-liners. It seemed he had one for just about any situation. A good portion of those one-liners are not network appropriate. (I am sure many of you had fathers that had those kinds of phrases)

During this odd spring we have had, one his phrases has really come to the forefront of my consciousness. He used to say it whenever I would be working with something dangerous: power tools, vehicles and especially farm equipment. ?I ain?t got time for a funeral.?

Sure, it sounds crass, but it always drove the point home for me. Take a moment and do the job correctly, because there is not time for the consequences of being in a hurry.

As you are starting this 2018 planting season, make sure you are following safety guidelines. Make sure that you and your family are protected. Above all else, get enough rest. It is easy to get in a hurry, especially with spring being late and a shortened planting window. We all know that we want to get the crop in as soon as possible, and before the next wave of rain comes. None of that will mean anything if you are seriously injured, or worse.

My dad has been gone for over ten years now. No, it wasn?t an accident, just life. But this lesson is one that I have passed to my own children. For you and your family?s well-being, heed my father?s advice. Because nobody?s got time for a funeral.
