Angus breed improves by gathering data

As the dominant European breed in America, Angus purebred producers have set the bar high for themselves and others.

Their Certified Angus Beef program is the gold standard for producing quality beef.

Their slogan: ?They are worth more if they are black? has changed the hide color of a lot of animals. Even some breeds turned black over the years as Angus influenced their genetics.

But now the age of data collection is upon the industry. The capability to predict the expected progeny difference, or EPD, is a reality in buying any bull. All this requires producers to move forward and not remain stuck in the past.

John Pfieffer, from Oklahoma, is the outgoing president of the American Angus Association. He spoke to Radio Oklahoma Network farm broadcaster Ron Hays at a recent event.
