Agriculture is supposedly the business of farming and ranching, but in reality, it is a business of transportation. I was told in college the way to make money was to move an item of value from point of surplus to point of shortage. In agriculture, we have challenges in moving our harvest out of the countryside to feedlots, ethanol plants and ports.

A solution is allowing heavier trucks on roads, especially interstate highways. Can we decrease hauling costs by decreasing the number of trips and be safe with heavier trucks? A transportation specialist gives his view.

Mike Steehhoek is executive director of the Soy Transportation Coalition (STC). He spoke to me about the advantages of heavier trucks and the public?s perception – the practice would be unsafe and damaging.
