Adapting to adversity

Midwest farmers this past fall/spring were forced to complete fieldwork in ?unprecedented environments.? An agricultural supply cooperative speaks to how farmers were able to overcome such adverse conditions.

Jim Spradlin, chief executive officer for Growmark, Inc., states, “I’m certain there’s never been a year like it,” when reflecting on the whirlwind of events, which have accumulated since last fall. Spradlin speaks to missed opportunities impacting crop development.

?In our world, we endured the condensed fall season, which limited applications of some key nutrients, crop protection products. It?s still fresh in our minds what we endured this spring. It amazed me how resilient our farmer customers were throughout this year and how our employees stepped up to meet the challenge,” Spradlin said.

Growmark, Inc. staff worked diligently in providing reliable, quality agronomic and fuel inputs to farmer customers. Spradlin commends his agronomy, fuels and lubricants staff, who devoted many hours to deliver agricultural solutions this past fall and spring.

?Transportation ran 24 hours a day, coordinating all loads distributed in the short windows of time we had. (It) was remarkable in itself,? Spradlin said. ?Then all of those folks on the front line, trying to get applications done. There was probably more hours than should have been put in.”

Spradlin remains amazed by agriculture, and how all those involved can ?get the job done when needed.? Growmark, Inc. helps farmer customers ?get the job done? by offering new ideas, products and services.

?Nothing we?re investing more heavily in today than technology. Infrastructure, from the capacity of storage we have, amount of application equipment we have remain important and a vital part of our future. We have a filtering program, called AgValidity, which is a tool our system uses to test new ideas, products and services we think will be on the mark for the benefit of our farmer customers,” Spradlin said.
