Accommodating increasing pork supplies

The United States food service industry is finding new ways to incorporate pork as the domestic supply continues to increase.

Subway? unveiled three, limited-time offers earlier this month. Each offering features pork in a unique way. National Pork Board vice president of domestic marketing Jarrod Sutton says the Pork Checkoff has worked closely with Subway?, in developing new sandwiches, for quite some time now.

?Many people are probably aware of Subway? and their experimentation with pulled pork sandwiches,? Sutton said. ?Those have been successful for Subway?. They call them limited-time offers for a reason. It?s nice to give it (pork) a nice jolt, to generate some interest and drive traffic into the stores. And the pulled pork sandwich has successfully done that in the past.?

Sutton talks about a new offering that puts a twist on the pulled pork sandwich.

?It?s actually offered in a wrap. They?re calling it they?re ?Crunchy Signature Wra,?? Sutton said. ?I think that?s an interesting twist because it?s incredibly versatile. So far, so good. It launched on August 1st, and early indications are that it?s been well received by Subway? shoppers.?

?Besides the pulled pork, crunchy wrap is a Cuban sandwich. It?s pork loin chopped up and pulled. It?s much like the pulled pork wrap, but it also includes ham. The third, and newest one, is a rib meat sandwich. It?s formed and portioned rib meat, (and) they?re calling it a riblet sandwich,? Sutton said.

The new offerings are available in different regions across the country.
