Over the last few years, the adoption of solar technology has really taken off in Iowa. But the challenge is getting people to understand its cost-saving benefits. Solar was the newest topic brought up at the National Energy Conference this week.

Tim Dwight is President of Iowa Solar Energy Trade Association. Dwight says the main challenge in this industry is simply education.

?The end-consumers used to just flip on a light switch not knowing about other options or how energy is created, sent, or even priced. But as more education becomes available people start looking at it.?

He says solar works for almost any market.

?On the investment side it comes down to what your rate structure is and the cost of your energy as well as if you can receive any additional incentives or absorb those tax credits?.

Dwight says solar has a future in Iowa.

?We have quite a few businesses and farmers putting it in. Our future is bright but we also have to be cognitive to make sure our growth is acceptable and it is not disrupting the marketplace specifically grid structure.?

He adds they?re finding new opportunities of what solar can provide but they need to be evaluated.
