37961We are into the winter season. Most farmers have concluded their fall activities, harvest and fall fertilization, both organic and inorganic.

I talked with a young agronomist from New Century FS, part of the Growmark system. She is now focusing on getting interns ready for the year ahead.

If you have a student in your family that may want to be a crop scout, agronomist or other agricultural professional, we get the drill on how taking your book knowledge to the field and getting your boots muddy. This translates into professionals ready to take on the challenges of 21st century agriculture.

Emily Ewolt is a field agronomist with New Century FS. Ewolt explains the philosophy of the company when exposing ag students to this field. “We definitely believe in having a strong intern program. I know a lot about that. I started as seasonal help when I was 18 in high school. I started as a crop scout right away. That’s kind of the first foot in the door internship with local member companies like New Century. It’s a great way to apply what you’re learning in college out in the field.”

At New Century FS they typically hire around 10 crop scouts every year to cover their territory. “For me it connected the dots a lot more than reading out of textbook. So, it’s a critical first step to get your feet in agronomy career,” Ewolt said.
